(ANSA) - ROME, JUNE 8 - PREMIER SILVIO BERLUSCONI SAID
TUESDAY HE PLANNED TO DO HIS BIT FOR ITALIAN TOURISM, RELYING ON HIS "SENSUAL VOICE" TO NARRATE A GOVERNMENT TOURISM COMMERCIAL.
IN AN ADDRESS TO THE ASSEMBLY OF ITALIAN HOTELIERS, THE
PREMIER SAID HE HAD INITIALLY AGREED WITH TOURISM MINISTER MARIA VITTORIA BRAMBILLA TO APPEAR IN THE ADS.
"BUT LAST NIGHT, AFTER THE MINISTER AND I SCREENED THE
COMMERCIAL, I TOLD HER TO STRIKE ME OUT AND USE ONLY MY VOICE,
WHICH IS RECOGNISABLE AS WELL AS FAIRLY SENSUAL".
BERLUSCONI URGED ITALIANS TO GIVE THE COUNTRY A HAND
DURING THE ECONOMIC CRISIS BY OPTING FOR DOMESTIC DESTINATIONS
FOR THEIR SUMMER HOLIDAYS THIS YEAR RATHER THAN FOREIGN ONES.
"STAY IN ITALY, GET TO KNOW IT MORE, SPEND YOUR MONEY IN
ITALY".
THE PREMIER SAID THE COMMERCIALS WOULD FOCUS ON THIS
SLOGAN.
BERLUSCONI ALSO TOLD THE ASSEMBLY THAT A MAXIMUM TEN EURO
HOTEL TAX ON ROME HOTELS FORESEEN BY THE GOVERNMENT'S BUDGET
ADJUSTMENT MEASURE TO HELP FILL THE CAPITAL'S DEPLETED COFFERS
WOULD BE LEVIED ONLY AS A LAST RESORT.
ROME MAYOR GIANNI ALEMANNO HAS PROMISED HIM THAT HE WOULD MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO FIND FUNDS ELSEWHERE, SAID THE PREMIER.
"THE HOTEL TAX WILL BE IMPOSED ONLY AS A LAST RESORT,
AFTER THOROUGH, THOROUGH, THOROUGH NEGOTIATIONS WITH YOU," HE
ASSURED HOTEL OWNERS, WHO COMPLAINED THAT THEY ARE TREATED BY
THE GOVERNMENT AS "CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD".
BERLUSCONI SAID HE BEEN TOLD THAT THE POSSIBLE HOTEL TAX
WOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE BUDGET ADJUSTMENT MEASURES "AT THE VERY LAST MINUTE".
BUT THE PREMIER EXPLAINED THAT THERE HAD BEEN LITTLE
CHOICE IN THE MATTER SINCE THE PREVIOUS CENTRE-LEFT
ADMINISTRATIONS OF ROME MAYORS WALTER VELTRONI AND FRANCESCO
RUTELLI HAD LEFT "VERY HUGE DEBTS".
